READ
The most important you can do is read with your child every day.
PLAY PLAY PLAY
Free unstructured play is of utmost importance to the development of your kindergartner. Play enhances language development, social competence, creativity, imagination, and thinking skills. When children play, they draw upon their past experiences, things they have done, seen others do, read about, or seen on television, and they use these experiences to build games, play scenarios, and engage in activities. They use fine and gross motor skills in their play. They react to each other socially. They think about what they are doing or going to do. They use language to talk to each other or to themselves and they very often respond emotionally to the play activity. The integration of these different types of behaviors is key to the cognitive development of young children. Because children's play draws upon all of these behaviors, it is a very effective vehicle for learning, so play, play, play!
SIGHT WORDS
These are words which are commonly found in print and your child should be able to quickly recognize. Please continue to practice these with your child. We would like them to be able to master as many as they can by the completion of kindergarten. One of the best ways I have found to aid the students in remembering words is to place them around your home on familiar objects which have significance to touches the word (ex. the word "in" could be places on a door-each time the child goes in the door, he/she touches the word and says "in")
